The Hawaiian Islands were first settled between 300 and 600 A.D. by Polynesians as the native kingdom of Hawaii. In 1778, Hawaii’s British visitors noted the large sugar cane farms on the islands. Hawaii’s climate is known for its yearlong warmth, making a favorable environment for all divisions of Hawaii’s economy. Hawaii is the only state that grows coffee and is the world leader in producing macadamia nuts and growing orchids. Other important agricultural products include cane sugar, pineapples, bananas, and nursery products.
Manufacturing has recently been introduced into the Hawaiian economy; however, tourism is by far the leading contributor to state revenues. The uniqueness of the Hawaiian islands makes it a popular tourist destination year-round and also makes tourism one of the state’s largest employers. Hawaii residents represent a more diverse ethnic and cultural mix than any other U.S. state.
