Jackson, the largest city in Mississippi, has been the state capital since 1821. French Canadian Louis Le Fleur settled the area in 1792 and called it Le Fleur's Bluff. Because of its location along the Pearl River, Le Fleur’s Bluff became a stopping point for those traveling through the Old Natchez Trace. When the leaders of Mississippi chose to establish the state capital in the area, it was renamed Jackson. Jackson was chosen to replace Natchez as the state’s capital because of its central location at the crossroads of Interstate 55 (north-south) and Interstate 20 (east-west).
The city was named after Major General Andrew Jackson, who helped negotiate the Treaty of Doak’s Stand and who later became president. The city was burned three times by Sherman’s troops during the Civil War and was a hotbed of activity during the 60’s Civil Rights movement. In fact, Jackson was the site of the murder of Civil rights leader Medgar Evers in 1963. In spite of this turmoil, the city has retained its southern charm and antebellum style.
Although less than 8,000 people lived in the Jackson area at the turn of the century, its population began accelerating rapidly after 1900, and it is now one of the dynamic growth areas of the Sunbelt. It is a major distribution center with a prime location equal distance between Memphis and New Orleans, north-south, and between Dallas and Atlanta, east-west.
