Plains Indian tribes (Osage, Kiowa, Comanche, and Apache) dominated the Oklahoma territory when it was explored by the Spanish in 1541. Oklahoma also produces other minerals such as helium, zinc, coal, copper, and silver. Traditional manufacturing industries of the state are related to the state’s other economic products. Important manufacturing outputs include oil equipment, farm machinery, food processing, and meat packing.
Oklahoma’s livestock products of cattle, swine, broilers, and dairy products attribute to more than half of the state’s annual farm revenues. The state’s rich, fertile soil produces large crops of wheat, cotton, pecans, peanuts, and peaches.
Greater economic diversity is found near Oklahoma’s two major cities, Oklahoma City and Tulsa. Industries such as biotechnology, telecommunications, aviation, and aerospace are included in these regions. These areas are also home to many large corporate and regional headquarters of such companies as Six Flags, SBC, AOL, Dish Network, and Cingular. The American Airlines maintenance base in Tulsa is the largest in the world.
Oklahoma possesses four mountain ranges: the Ouachitas, Arbuckles, Kiamichis, and the Wichitas. There are more man-made lakes in Oklahoma than in any other state comprising over one million surface areas of water and 2,000 more miles than the coastlines of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts combined. In sharp contrast to the vast areas of open plains, nearly 25% of Oklahoma is covered by forestlands.
