Originally inhabited by the Narragansett Indians, the city was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams as a refuge for religious dissenters. First Baptist Church in America, the oldest Baptist church in the U.S. and John Carter Brown Library and Athenaeum, one of the oldest lending libraries in the World, are both located in Providence. Edgar Allan Poe, a longtime Providence resident, was a regular fixture at Athenaeum. The capitol has the first unsupported marble dome built in the United States and the fourth largest in the world. The inside boasts a full-length portrait of George Washington. The artist, a Rhode Island native named Gilbert Stuart, is also the same artist who created the president’s likeness on the $1 bill.

The Capital Center District and Waterplace Park have contributed to the city's downtown revitalization. The 4-acre Waterplace Park surrounds a tidal basin and features an amphitheater, boat landing and a multifunctional building.
