El Paso, Texas’ sixth-largest city and the seat of El Paso County government, is located in the western part of the state on the north bank of the Rio Grande opposite the Mexican city of Ciudad Juárez. El Paso is one of the largest and busiest of the border cities and is also the intersection point of three states (Texas, New Mexico, and Chihuahua), and two countries (the USA and Mexico). In 1598, Juan de Oñate took formal possession of the area of El Paso/ Ciudad Juárez for King Philip II of Spain, calling the area “El Paso del Rio del Norte,” meaning the crossing of the river, and giving the area its name: “El Paso.”
El Paso was established at a settlement in 1827 by Juan María Ponce de León, incorporated as a city in 1873, but did not become a state until 1848. The arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1881 assured El Paso a stable future. In 1911, the Mexican Revolution thundered into town and refugees streamed into El Paso from Mexico by the thousands. In 1967, the U.S. agreed to cede the long-disputed Ciudad Juárez portion of El Paso to Mexico.

El Paso’s Franklin Mountains State Park has a convenient tramway throughout its habitat.
The Wild West was El Paso; the city flourished during the rambunctious era of gunfighters, cattle rustlers, saloons, famous marshals, and the Texas Rangers.
