Mississippi name is derived from the Native American word meaning “big waters” in reference to the Mississippi River. Originally part of the Mississippian Culture of the second millennium, early inhabitants included many Native American tribes that include the Chickasaw, Choctaw, Natchez, Yazoo, and the Biloxi. Today many places in Mississippi bear these names.
In 1540, the Spanish first explored the territory of Mississippi, but the French were the first to establish a permanent settlement at the present location of Ocean Springs (Old Biloxi). The United States took control of the territory and on December 10, 1817, Mississippi became the 20th state.
Traditionally a rural state, Mississippi’s economy has historically been derived from agriculture. For more than one hundred years, cotton was the state’s leading product. Today, Mississippi ranks third in the nation in cotton production, with soybeans leading the state’s agricultural output. Agricultural diversification has lead to the production of significant crops of peanuts, pecans, rice, and sweet potatoes. Poultry, aquaculture and dairy products are also significant in agricultural revenue contributions.
Extending its revenue sectors from its historical agricultural activities, Mississippi has grown its manufacturing to surpass agriculture as the leading revenue producing sector of the state’s economy. Industrialized products such as chemicals and plastics as well as food processing and wood products attribute for large portions of the manufacturing industry. Military facilities as well as the Stennis Space Flight Center provide many opportunities for direct employment to the state.
In most recent years, development of the Gulf Coast has created an influx of visitors and made tourism one of the most profitable new industries of the state. The addition of casinos and resorts enhance the existing attraction of the beaches of the Gulf Islands National Seashore. Mississippi has many historic sites connected to United States history including many well-preserved Pre-Civil War mansions, Vicksburg National Military Park and Natchez Trace.
