The Dakota Territory was first explored by French Canadians in 1738. The Lewis and Clark expedition traveled the region in 1804 and in 1812; the first permanent settlements were established. The United States gained possession of the territory in 1824, eventually separating the area into North Dakota and South Dakota. Both states entered statehood on the same day, November 2, 1889, as the 39th and 40th states.
